4 Players · Cowrie Board Race
A cowrie-dice race on a 5×5 board (Chowka-Bara / Ashta-Chamma). Get all 4 of your gotis home to the centre first — free-for-all, or 2 v 2 with your partner across the board.
The four cross cells at the edge-mids are the players' home corners; the centre cross is the finish. Gotis travel round the outer ring, spiral inward, then into the centre. The five cross cells are safe — a goti can't be cut there.
Throw 4 cowries: your move = how many land face-up (1–4); all four face-down = 8 — the ishto. You need an ishto to bring a goti out onto your home; the goti then moves by your next throw. An 8 lets you throw again — but two 8s in a row forfeits your turn.
Land on an opponent's goti (off a safe cell) to cut it — it goes back to its box and you get an extra throw. Cutting earns you a markut, and you need a markut before any of your gotis may leave the outer ring for the inside squares — until then they simply keep going round the outside.
Two of your own gotis that meet on an ordinary square become a jodiyu — a pair. It moves as one piece at half speed (one square per 2 points, so a 1 cannot shift it and a 4 — the biggest throw that moves anything — carries it 2), a lone goti can neither cut it nor share its square, and only another jodiyu can cut a jodiyu.
First to bring all four gotis home to the centre wins; in 2 v 2 both partners must be home.
